Arona's inaugural trail race takes the old paths between Valle San Lorenzo and the town of Arona, ten kilometres of dry southern-Tenerife hillside — barranco, volcanic track and a good deal of loose ground. It is run as a memorial to Óscar Hernández.
What to expect. A 10km course starting at 10am on Sunday 11 October from Valle San Lorenzo and finishing in the Plaza de Arona. Registration is open until 11.59pm on 7 October, so enter well ahead of the day. Southern Tenerife in October is hot by mid-morning even up here — carry water and expect the sun.
Practical bit. Valle San Lorenzo and Arona town sit in the hills above Los Cristianos, fifteen to twenty minutes up. If you are not running, the finish in the plaza is a good excuse to see the old town, which almost nobody staying on the coast bothers with. A hire car is the only sensible way to get to a 10am start up here.
