What's on in El Hierro

Fly into: El Hierro (VDE), Tenerife South (TFS) + ferry

El Hierro is the smallest, westernmost and least visited of the Canary Islands — a steep, green volcanic triangle that the whole island has turned into a UNESCO Geopark and Biosphere Reserve. There are no mass resorts here. Instead you get La Frontera's terraced vineyards, the lonely lighthouse at Orchilla that once marked the edge of the known world, and the marine reserve at La Restinga, one of the best dive sites in the Atlantic. With almost no light pollution, the night skies are extraordinary. This is the Canaries stripped back to landscape, water and quiet.

The fiesta calendar is small and deeply traditional, which is exactly the appeal. San Juan on 24 June brings midsummer bonfires and local celebration to the villages, and in early September the patron-saint Fiestas de Nuestra Señora de la Paz take over with processions and music. El Hierro's grandest tradition, the Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes, sees the island's patron carried on foot across the whole island in a vast pilgrimage — but it happens only once every four years, so check before you build a trip around it.

Tiny El Hierro (VDE) airport takes domestic hops from Tenerife North and Gran Canaria; most visitors fly into Tenerife South (TFS) from the UK and connect, or take the ferry across from Los Cristianos. Once here, a hire car is essential — the island is all switchback mountain roads, and the best coves, viewpoints and forest walks are simply unreachable otherwise.

Whether you're in a La Frontera guesthouse, a Valverde apartment or a rural casa up in the hills, this is your guide to what's actually on while you're here — the small island fiestas and traditions worth timing your visit around.
