What's on in Costa Daurada
The Costa Daurada — the "golden coast" — runs south from the Garraf hills down past Tarragona to the Ebre delta, named for the soft, pale sand that lines its long, shallow beaches. It's a gentler, flatter coast than the Costa Brava, and a varied one: Salou brings the families and the PortAventura theme park, Tarragona stacks a full Roman amphitheatre and UNESCO ruins right above the sea, and down at the Delta de l'Ebre the rice paddies and flamingos take over. Cambrils and the old fishing towns keep things low-key in between.
Catalan tradition runs strong here, and the calendar shows it. June brings Sant Joan on the 23rd, when bonfires line the beaches at Coma-ruga, Salou and beyond for midsummer eve, followed days later by the Festa Major de Sant Pere, the fishermen's patron-saint festival. Down in the Ebre delta the summer fills with food and water fiestas — mussel gastronomy days, the popular kayak descent of the river, and the Festa del Mar — while Tarragona's calendar builds towards its human-tower castells and the fire-running correfocs later in the season.
Reus (REU) is the nearest airport, a short hop behind Salou and well served from the UK, while Barcelona (BCN) is around an hour up the coast with many more flights. Trains link the main beach towns neatly, but a hire car is what gets you to the Ebre delta, the Priorat wine country and the quieter inland villages most visitors never see.
Whether you're in a Salou apartment, a Cambrils hotel or a house near the delta, this is your guide to what's genuinely on while you're on the Costa Daurada — the festivals worth planning around and the local fiestas worth stumbling into.
