Virgen del Carmen 2026 — Costa del Sol
Around 16 July the whole coast carries its patron of the sea down to the water for candlelit maritime processions.
The Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of fishermen and sailors, and her feast on 16 July is one of the most atmospheric nights of the Costa del Sol summer. In around thirty coastal towns — Nerja, Torremolinos, Marbella, Estepona, Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Málaga and more — her statue is carried from the church down to the shore on the shoulders of bearers, then out to sea on a flotilla of decorated fishing boats, with fireworks reflecting off the water.
What to expect. Each town fixes its own night between roughly 16 and 26 July, so there's nearly always one happening somewhere along the coast. Processions usually set off in the evening; arrive early to get a spot on the harbour wall or the sand.
Practical bit. Because the celebrations rotate from town to town over ten days or so, a hire car lets you catch whichever procession fits your stay — and the coast road between the resorts is part of the pleasure. Check the local town hall for the exact date in the village you're nearest to.
