Lloret de Mar spends most of the summer being Lloret de Mar. In September it does something rather better: turns the sky over the bay into a screen. The Lloret Drone Festival flies 300 synchronised drones in formation above the water, set to music, on two consecutive nights — and the two shows are different from each other, so seeing both is not a repeat.
What to expect. Two evenings, 11 and 12 September, watched from the seafront and the beach. It is roughly fifteen minutes of formation flying, which sounds short and is not — a well-programmed drone show holds a crowd completely. Get down early for a spot on the sand; the promenade fills up.
Practical bit. Free to watch, no ticket. Lloret is an hour up from Barcelona and the coast road north through Tossa is one of the great Mediterranean drives — twenty kilometres of cliff hairpins, and worth doing in daylight before the show. A hire car is the only way to do it.
