La Mola Craft Market (Hippy Market)
Formentera's most famous and authentic open-air craft market, held every Wednesday and Sunday afternoon in the hilltop village of El Pilar de la Mola near Platja de Migjorn. Certified local artisans sell handmade fashion, jewellery and woodwork while live music plays in the square and nearby bar terraces buzz.
This is the market that started Formentera's whole hippy reputation back in the seventies, when artists and makers first set up stalls in the square at El Pilar de la Mola. It still runs on that spirit. You'll find woven baskets, espadrilles, leather, hand-blown glass, ceramics and jewellery, much of it made by the people selling it, with a heartening lack of mass-produced tat. Wednesday and Sunday afternoons are the days, and the place fills up as the heat eases off.
Live music usually plays in the central square, and the bars around the edge throw their terraces open, so it's easy to settle in with a drink and watch the crowd drift by. It's as much a meeting point as a shopping trip. Entry is free, and the hilltop setting makes the drive out worth it on its own.
