September Festivities in Honour of the Holy Christ of Calvary
Icod's main patronal celebration fills the town with open-air concerts, comedy shows, family programming and street parties for around two weeks each September. The opening night features a ceremonial speech (pregón) followed by live music and DJs.
This is Icod's big one, the town's own patron-saint knees-up, sprawling over a fortnight of September with most of the action out across the squares rather than behind any ticket gate. Things kick off with the pregon, a heartfelt opening speech from a local figure, before the music takes over and keeps going late. Expect tribute bands working through Juan Luis Guerra numbers, candlelit sets from singers like Besay Perez, dance orchestras and DJs to close the night.
There's a strong comedy thread too, with Canarian stand-ups on stage, plenty laid on for kids and a literary-musical evening up at Plaza Andres de Lorenzo Caceres. The mood is unhurried and properly local rather than put on for visitors, which is rather the point. It's free, so just wander in. Timings shift a little each year, so check the town hall listings.
