What's on in Adra

Adra is a working fishing port on the Costa de Almería, one of the oldest towns in Spain, with a long history that takes in Phoenician traders and an old sugar-cane industry. It's an unpretentious place — a busy harbour, a fishing fleet, a plain town beach and a backdrop of greenhouses and the Alpujarra mountains — that gets few foreign tourists and feels all the more genuine for it.

The big day is the Virgen del Carmen sea procession in July, when the fishermen carry their patron out over the water, while Cultural Fridays run guided night visits to the town's heritage through the season. Here's what's on while you're here.
