Betancuria is the old capital of Fuerteventura, a tiny inland village tucked into a sheltered valley among bare, eroded mountains in the heart of the island. Founded in 1404 and once the island's seat of power, it has a fine 17th-century church, a handful of stone houses and craft workshops, and a quiet that feels miles from the beach resorts. With well under a thousand residents, it's more a living monument than a town.
