El Rompido is a small former fishing village on the Costa de la Luz in Huelva, sitting at the mouth of the Río Piedras behind a long, shifting sand spit — the Flecha del Rompido — that you reach by little ferry across to wild, near-empty beaches. It's a low-key, pine-backed spot popular with Spanish families, with a marina and a couple of golf courses but no high-rise sprawl.
In July the village honours its seafaring past with the Virgen del Carmen procession, when the patron of fishermen is carried out across the water. Here's what's on while you're here.
