What's on in Garachico

Garachico is one of the loveliest towns on Tenerife's north coast — once the island's main port until a 1706 eruption buried the harbour in lava, which is why its swimming is now in the famous natural rock pools the same eruption left behind. It's a handsome old town of stone churches and quiet squares, far gentler in mood than the southern resorts and well off the package-holiday track.

The town's big week is the patron-saint fiestas for Santa Ana and San Roque in August, and on San Roque's day the Romería sends an ox-cart procession and walkers in traditional Canarian dress through the streets. Here's what's on while you're here.
