Portbou Festa Major (Sant Jaume Patron Saint Festival)
Portbou's main town festival for its patron saint Sant Jaume, with several days of free street life: an opening parade with batucada drummers, sardana dancing, open-air concerts and orchestra dancing (in past years La Principal de la Bisbal), a beach foam party, swimming and petanque, plus a closing correfoc fire-run with the Diables de l'Albera. The open-air parts are easy to enjoy without Catalan; exact 2026 dates and full program were not yet published by the town hall at time of writing.
Portbou throws itself into a few days of street life each July to honour Sant Jaume, and most of it spills out into the squares, gardens and down onto the sand. The percussion band TramuntaKada kicks things off with a noisy parade, and from there it's a loose run of sardana dancing in the market square, petanque tournaments, a fun run for all ages, even simultaneous chess matches in the gardens. Evenings turn to live orchestras and open-air dancing, La Principal de la Bisbal among them in past years.
Bring the kids for the inflatables on the seafront and the foam party down at the main beach. It all builds to a correfoc on the final night, when the Diables de l'Albera run through the streets trailing sparks. None of it needs much Catalan. Exact 2026 dates and the full programme weren't published when we wrote this, so check before you travel.
