Gáldar Agricultural Market
A relaxed biweekly Sunday farmers' market in the historic Plaza de Santiago, where Gran Canaria producers sell seasonal fruit and veg, artisan cheeses, honey, bread and local sweets. Just turn up and browse, no Spanish needed.
Plaza de Santiago fills up on these Sunday mornings with growers and small producers who have driven in from across Gran Canaria. You buy straight from the people who made or grew it: seasonal fruit and veg, artisan cheeses, jars of island honey, fresh bread and local sweets. No middlemen, and no Spanish required to point and smile.
It is an easygoing, neighbourly sort of morning rather than a big tourist event, which is rather the point. One nice touch: students from the town's catering school often set up to cook tastings using ingredients bought from the stalls right there, so you can sample what the producers have brought. It runs every other Sunday through the year, so it is worth checking the date before you set off.
