Fiesta del Carmen - Maritime Procession
Honouring the patron saint of fishermen, the image of the Virgen del Carmen is carried in a colourful maritime procession across the bay of San Sebastián, escorted by a flotilla of decorated boats and accompanied by the town band. It is the spectacular highlight of a week of fiestas with concerts, sport and traditional dances.
Every 16 July the fishing town stops to honour the Virgin who looks after those who work the sea. Her statue is lifted from the church, carried down through the streets and lowered onto a fishing boat, and from there she leads a flotilla out across the bay. Locals dress the boats with flags and flowers, the harbour fills with people, and the town band keeps things moving while the procession noses around the water and back.
It is a working port's day off, not a polished spectacle, and that is rather the point. Come early for a good spot on the quay, and stick around afterwards. The maritime procession sits inside a longer week of fiestas, so expect concerts, sport and traditional dances to spill on into the evening. Bring cash for whatever the bars are grilling.
