What's on in San Sebastián de La Gomera

San Sebastián is La Gomera's small capital and its main port, the last harbour Columbus stocked up in before crossing the Atlantic. It's a low-key working town wrapped around a sheltered bay, with a black-sand beach, a tidy old quarter of pastel houses and the ferry from Tenerife pulling in through the day. Most visitors pass through on their way to the forest and the valleys, but it's a pleasant place to stop and watch island life tick over.

The patron saint festivities of San Sebastián fill the streets in January, while in summer the Fiesta del Carmen carries the fishermen's saint out across the harbour in a boat procession, and San Juan brings midsummer bonfires down to the sand. Here's what's on while you're here.
