El Puig sits just north of Valencia city, an inland town built around its great fortified monastery, the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria del Puig — a vast pile of honey-coloured stone that still dominates the skyline. It's a working Valencian town, close enough to the city and the coast to be handy but with its own deep-rooted traditions.
