Night of Sant Joan - Beach Bonfires
On the shortest night of the year, locals gather on El Puig's beach for the Nit de Sant Joan with bonfires and firework displays by the sea. Just turn up and join the midsummer celebration - no Spanish needed.
Midsummer in Valencia is a beach affair, and El Puig keeps it refreshingly low-key. As 23 June fades into the longest day, families and friends drift down to Playa del Puig, light bonfires along the sand and stay out until the small hours. Tradition says you should wade in and wet your feet at midnight, so expect plenty of people paddling in the dark and a few brave souls jumping the fire for luck.
There's no ticket, no fuss and nothing you need to book. Bring something to sit on, a bottle of something cold, and let the firework displays out over the water do the rest. It's the sort of night you stumble into rather than plan for, and far better for it. Come early if you want a good patch of sand near a bonfire.
