El Verger is a small town on the flat farmland of the Marina Alta, just inland from Dénia and the river Girona. This is citrus country, and the town has a down-to-earth, agricultural feel — locals here far outnumber holidaymakers, which is rather the point.
Its calendar is proper Valencian. The patron saint festivities bring out the Moors and Christians, with costumed companies parading through the streets, and the regional Fira de Comerç Comarcal turns the town into a trade fair for the comarca.
