Paella Night on Calle Mayor
A wonderfully local fiesta night when neighbours line Calle Mayor cooking giant paellas over open fires, with a xaranga brass band wandering between the tables. A perfect window into village life and the smell of authentic Valencian paella in the open air.
This is one of those nights when a whole street turns into an outdoor kitchen. Come 10pm during El Verger's August fiestas, neighbours haul tables and chairs out onto Calle Mayor, light their firewood and get their giant pans bubbling away. The town hands out the chairs, tables and firewood; the locals bring the rice, the chatter and a competitive eye on whose paella is coming out best. A brass band, the Xaranga Garanxa, weaves between the tables keeping things loud and cheerful.
You don't need a seat at a table to enjoy it. Wander down, watch the fires catch, breathe in the woodsmoke and saffron, and stick around if you fancy it. Once the pans are scraped clean, a verbena kicks off well after midnight and the dancing carries on into the small hours.
