What's on in La Unión

La Unión is an inland former mining town behind Cartagena, in the hills of the Sierra Minera where lead and silver were once dug out of the rock — a heritage that gave birth to its own raw, work-worn style of flamenco. It's not a beach town at all, but for a few weeks each summer it becomes one of the most important places in the flamenco world.

That's down to the International Cante de las Minas Festival, now in its 65th year and the most prestigious singing contest in flamenco, held in the old market building, with the accompanying Cante de las Minas gastronomy days serving up local food alongside the music.
