La Noche Romántica (The Romantic Night)
On the summer-solstice weekend, this mountaintop castle village dresses itself in soft lighting and special decor for a romantic evening, with live instrumental music and a photo spot at the Penyal de Sant Josep lookout. Part of the nationwide 'Romantic Night' celebration in Spain's most beautiful villages, it is a low-key, atmospheric night just to stroll, listen and take in the views.
Guadalest is striking enough by day, perched on its crag above the reservoir. On this June evening the village trades the coach-trip crowds for something quieter. The lanes are lit low, a bit of special decor goes up, and a player or two works through instrumental pieces that drift down the narrow streets. You stroll, you stop, you listen. There's no programme to follow and nothing to buy your way into.
The set piece is the photocall up at the Penyal de Sant Josep lookout, where the valley falls away below and the light does most of the work. It's a small, gentle night rather than a big fiesta, run alongside the wider Romantic Night across Spain's prettiest villages. Come for the walk, the views and the calm, and stay until the stars are out.
