28th 'Song by the Sea' Choral Gathering
An open-air evening of sea-themed choral singing under the stars, bringing together three choirs: the Finestrat Choral Group, the Villajoyosa Choir and the University of Alicante Choir. A relaxed, free summer concert in the village square.
Three choirs share a single warm June night in Finestrat's Plaça de l'Àmfora, and the songs are havaneras: slow, swaying sea ballads that sailors once carried back from Cuba. Expect harmonies about longing, harbours and the women left behind, sung mostly in Spanish and Catalan, though the melodies do the talking and you won't need a word of either to be moved.
The Finestrat, Villajoyosa and University of Alicante choirs take turns and then join forces, starting around ten once the heat has eased off. It's free, it's outdoors, and the square fills with locals on folding chairs. Bring a light layer for later in the evening, arrive a little early for a decent spot, and let the sea songs wash over you for an hour and a half.
