Art al Vent - Open-Air Textile Art on the Balconies
Spain's most important open-air textile-art show drapes around 90 international fabric works from the balconies and streets of Gata de Gorgos. Free to wander any time of day through the village centre, with cultural activities running across the four weeks.
For a few weeks each July, the people of Gata de Gorgos turn their own balconies into a gallery. Around 90 fabric works are pegged out above the streets, sized like the old bed quilts they take their cue from, so they lift and ripple whenever the wind comes through. The route winds through the village centre and you simply walk it at your own pace, looking up. The pieces come from artists across dozens of countries, but the idea is a local one, borrowed from the Marina Alta habit of draping quilts from windows during processions.
Go in the evening if you can. As the heat drops the village fills out, and the organisers lay on concerts, talks and recitals along the way. It costs nothing, and there's no fixed timetable to catch.
