25th Popular Kayak Descent of the Ebre
A popular mass kayak paddle covering a scenic 12 km stretch of the River Ebre from Xerta through Aldover down to Tortosa. Open to anyone with a booked kayak, it is a community descent staged each June in defence of the river; registration closes 19 June.
Every June, a flotilla of paddlers gathers at Xerta and sets off downriver on a gentle 12km drift through Aldover and on to Tortosa. It's a slow, sociable morning on the water rather than a race, with the current doing most of the work and time enough to take in the reed-fringed banks and the cathedral town rising up at the finish. There's a serious point underneath the fun, though: this is the 25th year locals have paddled in protest at the upstream water transfers that have unbalanced the Ebre, so you're joining a long-running community cause as much as a day out.
Boats start at 9.30am and you'll need to book your own kayak ahead. Registration closes on 19 June, so sort it early. A single kayak is EUR 20, a double EUR 40 between two.
