Festa Major de Sitges (Town Festival)
Sitges' biggest annual fiesta in honour of patron saint Sant Bartomeu, with a saint's procession, street parades, family workshops and traditional music. The headline moment is the seafront fireworks display on the night of 23 August at 11pm.
For two days each August, Sitges hands its old town over to Sant Bartomeu. The narrow streets fill with parades, the saint's image is carried out in procession, and traditional Catalan music keeps things moving from morning onwards. There are family workshops dotted through the programme too, so it works well if you've brought children along. It's all free, which is part of the appeal.
The night to plan around is 23 August. At 11pm the fireworks go up over the seafront, and the whole town drifts down to the water to watch. Get there early and stake out a spot on the promenade or the beach. A word of warning: Sitges is small and gets busy, so book a room ahead and don't count on driving in. The train down from Barcelona is the easier way to arrive.
