Saint John's Eve Celebration in Santa Gadea
A traditional Saint John's Eve evening gathering in the Santa Gadea neighbourhood, marking the start of summer on the eve of 24 June. Open-air community celebration organised by the Humildad y Estrella brotherhood.
The night of 23 June is when Spain stays up to welcome midsummer, and in Ayamonte the Santa Gadea neighbourhood does it the local way. The Humildad y Estrella brotherhood runs a velada by the Iglesia de San Vicente de Paul: tables and chairs out on the street, neighbours catching up over a drink, and the kind of unhurried, end-of-the-school-year mood that has nothing to do with the tourist trail.
Expect music, a bite to eat, and children running about well past their bedtime. It is free, it is run by people who live here, and it is more about good company than spectacle. If you are staying nearby, wander over after dinner and see how an Andalusian neighbourhood marks the shortest night of the year. A small, genuine slice of summer.
