Noche de San Juan (St John's Bonfire Night)
Telde's biggest fiesta night: a huge bonfire at Siete Puentes, the annual 'Mechones de Melenara' fire torches on the beach, open-air street parties and a silent midnight light spectacle over Plaza de San Juan. The next day (24 June) brings the patron-saint procession and traditional Canarian games.
San Juan is the night Telde stays up. The town has been working towards it for weeks, and the festival programme builds through June with the things Telde does best: open-air bolero nights in Plaza de San Juan, Canarian wrestling down by the coast at Melenara, and a steady run of concerts and street events. By the night of 23 June the whole place turns out for midsummer, with the square at the centre of it.
It's the kind of fiesta that belongs to the locals first, so you're joining in rather than watching from the sidelines. Everything is free, the patron-saint celebrations carry on into 24 June, and the easy thing to do is simply turn up, find the square and follow the crowd.
