What's on in Telde

Telde is Gran Canaria's second city, an old town on the east of the island that long predates the resorts and rarely shows up on holiday itineraries. Its San Juan quarter is genuinely historic — a quiet grid of stone streets around the Basílica de San Juan Bautista, with a Flemish altarpiece inside — and there's serious pre-Hispanic heritage at the Cuatro Puertas caves nearby. It's a real working Canarian city, not a tourist set-piece, which is rather the point.

The Noche de San Juan lights bonfires across town for midsummer, the timple concert series brings the little Canarian guitar to the stage, and Aires de Telde adds its own cultural programme. Here's what's on while you're here.
