3rd Ibiza Tuba Meeting: Free Public Concerts
A gathering of Balearic tuba and euphonium players with two free public concerts: a piano-and-tuba duo playing Piazzolla, Telemann and others on Friday, and a closing students' concert on Saturday.
For two days, tuba and euphonium players from music schools across the Balearics gather at the municipal school in Santa Eulària for classes and ensemble sessions. Most of it is for the players themselves, but two concerts are thrown open to anyone who wanders in, and both are free.
The Friday evening one is the pick. Paula Bonet on piano and Felipe Arroyo on tuba, billed as the Ibossim Dúo, work through Piazzolla tangos alongside Telemann, Marcello and Glazunov, which is a stranger and lovelier pairing than the tuba's reputation might suggest. Saturday's closing concert hands the stage to the students. Don't expect polish there, but it's a warm-hearted way to hear an instrument that rarely gets the spotlight. Worth an hour if you're nearby.
