Breña Alta Trail (Mountain Running Race)
A weekend trail-running festival on La Palma's volcanic slopes, with a vertical climb, a children's race and main-day competitive distances of 30km, 17km and 11km plus a relaxed hiking category. A spectator-friendly event for active visitors who want to take part or cheer the runners.
Each June, the green ridges above Breña Alta fill with runners tackling La Palma's volcanic terrain on foot. It's a proper weekend of it: a lung-busting vertical climb to start, then a main race day offering 30km, 17km and 11km routes across forest tracks, old footpaths and lava slopes, with the high country and the Atlantic stretching out below.
You don't have to be racing to enjoy it. There's a children's event and a relaxed hiking category for anyone who'd rather walk the trails than sprint them, and the finish area is an easy place to clap the runners home. Bring decent shoes if you fancy joining in, or just turn up to watch and soak up one of the island's better mornings out.
