Canary Islands Day in Fuencaliente

Held each year around the end of May, this is Fuencaliente doing the Day of the Canary Islands its own way, with the action centred on the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The heart of it is a shared Canarian lunch out in the square, all island staples, with a small ticket price you sort out at the town hall beforehand. While people eat, there's a timple workshop (that little five-string guitar) and singing from local versadores, who improvise verses on the spot.

Then it gets properly local. The lucha canaria takes over, including a singles-versus-married-men bout that's exactly as good-natured and competitive as it sounds, alongside juego del palo stick-fighting. Friday belongs to the village schoolchildren, so by the weekend the whole place is in on it. Quiet, unfussy, and genuinely the real thing rather than a show put on for visitors.
