Every Sunday morning the old town of Teguise turns itself over to the market, and the cobbled streets fill up fast. Stalls spill out across the squares: Canarian handicrafts and clothing, farm produce, the odd bit of livestock, and the usual run of holiday souvenirs alongside trinkets from further afield. You'll smell the food before you see it, and somewhere a band will be playing traditional island music while folk dancers work a corner of one of the plazas.

It runs from around nine until two, so there's no rush, but the car parks clog up by mid-morning and the lanes get tight in the heat. Go early, take cash, and leave time to duck into the town's little museums between stalls. Easy to enjoy whatever language you speak.
