Havaneres Night with Arpellots
An open-air evening of havaneres, the traditional Catalan-Mallorcan sea shanties, performed by the group Arpellots at the harbour during the Sant Joan festivities. Just show up and soak in the seaside atmosphere.
Havaneres are the slow, salty songs that sailors brought back from Cuba, and Portopetro's little harbour is exactly the sort of place they were made for. Arpellots take the stage around half nine, once the heat has dropped off, and the crowd settles in along the quay with the boats bobbing behind them. The voices carry, the harmonies are easy to fall into, and you don't need a word of Catalan to follow along.
It's part of the Sant Joan celebrations, so the mood is relaxed and local rather than polished. If you're lucky, there'll be rom cremat going round, the flaming spiced rum that traditionally accompanies these nights. Bring a jumper for the sea breeze and turn up early if you want a decent spot near the front.
