"Arico Handmade" Craft Fair (1st edition)
The inaugural edition of Arico's local craft market, showcasing Canarian artisans and handmade goods as part of the town's push to support traditional crafts and local talent. A relaxed browse-and-buy day for handmade products.
Up in the hills of southern Tenerife, well away from the resorts, the barrio of La Sabinita put on Arico's first craft fair on 1 May. The council's culture department started it to give the town's makers a stall and some footfall, so the goods are the real thing: ceramics, woodwork, weaving, jewellery, stonework and the fine openwork embroidery the Canaries are known for, sold by the people who made them.
Entry is free, and there's more to it than browsing. The day ran with pattern-making workshops, wine tastings and local food, and live Canarian folklore groups playing right through. Worth the drive if you've a hire car and fancy a working inland town over another seafront market. The council wants it to become an annual fixture, so a second edition should follow.
