Canary Islands Day in San Miguel de Abona
San Miguel marks Canary Islands Day with a free village programme: a farming-and-livestock photo exhibition, afternoon food stalls and children's activities, a traditional gofio-ball tasting at 19:00, and an evening concert by the municipal band at 20:30. An authentic, easy-to-join taste of local Canarian culture.
Every 30 May the Canary Islands mark their regional day, and San Miguel does it the proper village way, with the whole town centre given over to it. Things open mid-morning with a photo exhibition on local farming and livestock, the old backbone of life up here. By the afternoon the streets fill with food stalls and things for the kids: Canarian wrestling demos and a daft comedy show called Risas Canarias.
The bit worth turning up for is at 19:00, when everyone gathers to taste pelota de gofio, a ball of roasted cornmeal that's about as Canarian as it gets, with the Aparranda2 band playing along. Stick around for 20:30 and the municipal band and the Chasnera folk group round off the evening. It's free, unfussy and easy to wander into.
