Jesus Madrinan: 'The Firmness of an Instant' (photography exhibition)
A photography exhibition by Galician artist Jesús Madriñán at the Las Cigarreras cultural centre, a former tobacco factory turned arts hub. Free to drop in, with long opening hours that suit a holiday schedule.
Madriñán shoots young people on a night out, and he does it the slow way. Instead of a phone or a quick digital snap, he lugs a large-format analogue camera into nightclubs and after-hours bars, then asks his subjects to hold still long enough for the exposure. The results are oddly formal portraits of people caught mid-revelry, tired and unguarded and a bit wired, the tail end of an evening pinned down with the gravity of an old painting.
It's the kind of show you can wander into without a plan. Las Cigarreras is a former tobacco factory now given over to the arts, the kind of cavernous brick-and-iron space these big prints suit well. Entry is free, the hours are generous, and half an hour out of the sun looking at someone else's 3am is a fair trade. Worth a look if you're nearby.
