Exhibition: Nonell, Vallmitjana and the Roma

Two friends who met as students at the Llotja art school, painter Isidre Nonell and writer Juli Vallmitjana spent years drawn to the same subject: the Roma families living on the margins of Barcelona. This show at the Fundació Palau lays out how their worlds overlapped, in paintings, drawings, photographs and theatre costume designs, plus literary pieces and odd corners of their lives, such as the silverware workshop Vallmitjana ran where sculptors gathered. A fair bit of it has never been shown before. There are works by Picasso, Casagemas, Casas and Canals here too, and the story has a sad turn: the friendship broke off around 1906, five years before Nonell died.

The pictures do most of the talking, so you don't need much Catalan to get plenty out of it. A handy stop if you're passing through Caldes d'Estrac.
