Granada Provincial Open-Water Swimming Circuit 2026
The provincial open-water swimming circuit runs eleven beach and reservoir crossings across Granada from May to December; the nearest coastal legs to Otívar are Salobreña (26 July) and La Herradura in Almuñécar (6 September). Otívar town only relays the info, the races are not held in the village; participation requires Spanish-language registration.
This is a proper amateur swimming circuit rather than a holiday splash-about, run by Granada's provincial sports office across reservoirs inland and a couple of beaches down on the Costa Tropical. Most legs are buoy-marked 1,500m courses, with a 500m route for children and an optional 3,000m where the water allows. Red Cross crews shadow the swimmers, finishes are timed, and there's a points table across the season. Two legs reach the coast near Otívar: Salobreña on 26 July and La Herradura at Almuñécar on 6 September.
A word of warning before you pack your goggles. The races aren't held in Otívar itself, the village just passes on the details. Entry costs a fee, sign-up is done in Spanish through the circuit's own site, and the minimum age is eight. Worth knowing if you fancy joining in, or just turning up to watch.
