Sant Pere Pilgrimage to the Illa de Buda Hermitage
A traditional pilgrimage out to the remote hermitage on the Illa de Buda island in the Ebro Delta, honouring Saint Peter. A scenic, atmospheric Delta tradition mixing devotion with a country outing among the rice fields and wetlands.
Illa de Buda sits right at the mouth of the Ebro, where the river finally gives up and runs into the sea. It's properly remote, ringed by rice paddies and lagoons, with the little hermitage as the only real landmark for miles. Once a year, on 28 June, the people of Sant Jaume d'Enveja make the pilgrimage out to honour Saint Peter, and it doubles as a fine excuse for a day in the Delta.
This is an easygoing, local affair rather than a grand spectacle: a country outing across some of the flattest, biggest-skied land in Catalonia, in the company of people who've done it for generations. Bring sun cover and keep an eye out for the Delta's birdlife along the way. If you're staying nearby and fancy seeing a corner of the coast most visitors never reach, it's a quietly memorable morning.
