'The Conquest of Colour' - Angel D'Esury Exhibition
A fifty-work retrospective by Ayamonte painter Angel D'Esury, capturing local landscapes and everyday scenes in his characteristic warm rose and violet tones. Open all summer at the town's Casa Grande cultural centre.
Angel D'Esury, born in Ayamonte back in 1936, spent a long career painting the town he knew best, and this fifty-work show gathers the result across three rooms of the Casa Grande. It's a quiet, easy hour rather than a grand gallery outing. Expect harbour light, marsh and river, and ordinary street scenes worked up in long brushstrokes and that warm rose-and-violet palette he became known for.
He's regarded as one of the founders of the Ayamonte school of painting, so locals turn up partly out of pride. The building has had a recent spruce-up, with new hanging and signage. Entry is free, and it runs all summer, which makes it a sensible bolt-hole when the midday heat gets too much down by the river.
