St John's Eve Beach Night (Noche de San Juan)
Torrenueva's classic midsummer beach party on St John's Eve, with water activities from 6pm, a midnight bonfire lighting on Church Beach and a DJ from 11pm into the early hours. Barbecues are allowed if you clean up after yourself; only the official municipal bonfire is permitted.
San Juan is the night Spain throws itself at the sea, and Torrenueva does it without fuss. Things start gently at six, with inflatable mattresses bobbing about in the shallows while the light softens. As it gets dark the beach below the church fills up, families staking out a patch of sand, a few barbecues smoking away. The rule here is simple: pack out everything you bring, and leave the lighting of fires to the one official bonfire.
That Gran Hoguera goes up at midnight, the cue for the whole crowd to drift down to the water. From eleven the DJ keeps it going, and the dancing rolls on towards half four. Bring a towel, something warm for the small hours, and your own picnic. It's free, local, and refreshingly unpolished.
