Music in the Squares: The Uptown Band

Capdepera sits a little inland from the busier resorts of Mallorca's north-east coast, an old stone town that climbs up towards its hilltop castle. Plaça Castellet is one of its small squares, and on the morning of 20 June it hands itself over to The Uptown Band for the first concert of the summer's "Music in the Squares" run. It marks European Music Day, so the timing is a touch unusual for a gig: things kick off at 11.30am rather than after dark.

There's no ticket and no fuss. You wander in, find a spot in the shade or pull up a chair outside a nearby café, and let the band play. It's a gentle way to start the day, and a good excuse to poke around the old town and walk up to the castle afterwards.
