One of those quietly rewarding mornings most visitors to Dénia walk straight past. The Portal dels Socors, the old gate linking the castle to the town's seafaring quarter below, has just reopened after restoration, and a guide walks you through what the work turned up. There's the original Islamic-era doorway, reworked in the mid-1500s, then buried under rubble during the Napoleonic Wars. They also found a small Christian oratory from around 1550, tucked beside the watchtower. A real layering of the people who held this hill in turn.
Tours leave Saturdays and Sundays in June at 11:00 from the Torre del Consell, by the ticket kiosk. They're free, but you'll need to book ahead by phone (96 642 02 60, mornings). Worth it if you like your history with the actual stones in front of you.
