Guided Tour of the Illeta dels Banyets Archaeological Site
A guided walk around el Campello's iconic Illeta dels Banyets headland, taking in the historic coastal watchtower and one of the most important archaeological sites on the Costa Blanca, with Iberian, Roman and Phoenician remains right on the seafront. Offered in Spanish and French.
The Illeta is a low rocky tongue of land poking straight out into the Med, and it has been lived on for thousands of years. A guide walks you across the headland past Iberian, Roman and Phoenician foundations, with the sea on three sides and the waves doing most of the talking. The real curiosity is the "banyets" themselves: rectangular tanks cut into the rock at the water's edge, long thought to be Roman baths but actually fish farms, which still fill and empty with the tide.
You also take in the old coastal watchtower, built to spot pirates coming in off the water. Tours are run in Spanish and French, so a little of either helps, though the setting speaks for itself. Wear proper shoes; the ground is uneven and there's no shade to speak of.
