Memory of Sand Guided Tour
A guided walk through Guardamar's hilltop castle, the Rabita and Fonteta archaeological sites, ending among the secrets of the famous pine forest planted to hold back the dunes. English-language sessions are available on Fridays, making it an easy, low-cost outing for non-Spanish speakers.
This walk packs a lot of Guardamar into a couple of easy hours. You start up at the castle, looking down over the town and the river mouth, then drop to two archaeological sites most visitors never find: the Rabita, the remains of a tenth-century Islamic monastery dug out of the sand, and the older Phoenician settlement at La Fonteta. Your guide ties the layers together so the bare foundations actually start to make sense.
The last stretch is the best bit. The famous pine forest was planted to stop the dunes swallowing the town whole, and you finish among those trees learning how it was done. English sessions run on Friday mornings, the price is barely more than a coffee, and the pace suits anyone who can manage a gentle stroll. Wear proper shoes and bring water in the heat.
