100th Season of Summer Sardanes: Commemorative Concert by Cobla Montgrins
An open-air concert in the clifftop Santa Clotilde Gardens marking 100 years of summer sardana (traditional Catalan circle dance) music in Lloret, performed by the renowned Cobla Montgrins. The programme premieres a new sardana written for the centenary.
The Santa Clotilde Gardens sit high on the cliffs south of Lloret, with terraces of cypress and stone stairways dropping towards the sea. It's a lovely spot for a concert even before a note is played. This one marks a century of summer sardana music in the town, performed by Cobla Montgrins, one of Catalonia's best-known coblas. A cobla is the small wind-and-brass band that plays for the sardana, the gentle circle dance where people link hands and step it out together.
The programme builds to a brand-new sardana written specially for the centenary, getting its first airing here. Expect the bright, slightly nasal sound of the tenora carrying over the gardens as the light fades. Tickets are needed, so it's worth sorting yours in advance rather than turning up on spec.
