Guided Visit to Salou's Roman Sites (Kallipolis & Vila Romana de Barenys)
Free guided tours of Salou's two key Roman-era archaeological sites, Kallipolis and the Roman Villa of Barenys, led by the ÍBER excavation team. Visits run on the first weekend of each month, alternating between Saturday and Sunday and between Catalan and Spanish; advance booking on the ReservaPlay portal is required.
Most people come to Salou for the beach and barely register that the ground underfoot has been settled for the best part of two thousand years. These free tours, run by the ÍBER team who actually dig here, take you round two Roman-era sites: Kallipolis, an old coastal settlement, and the Roman villa at Barenys. You walk the foundations and the working trenches while the archaeologists explain what they've turned up and how they read it, which is a good deal more interesting than a plaque.
A few practical things to know. Visits land on the first weekend of each month, alternating between Saturday and Sunday, and the guiding alternates between Catalan and Spanish, so there's no English version. You need to book ahead through the ReservaPlay portal, as places go. Wear proper shoes and bring water; this is open ground in summer, not a museum hall.
