Art and Craft Fair
A morning gathering of local artists and craftspeople setting up stalls in Tortosa's market square. Free to browse, it is an easy, relaxed way for visitors to pick up handmade pieces and soak up the town atmosphere.
The stalls go up from mid-morning in Plaça del Mercat, the square beside Tortosa's old covered market down near the Ebro. It is a small, local affair rather than a big organised craft fair, run by the market traders and the town hall, so what you find shifts each time it comes around: someone painting, someone with jewellery or leatherwork, a table of ceramics or textiles.
Browsing costs nothing, and there is no pressure to buy. The pace is slow and chatty, which suits a morning when you have wandered down from the cathedral with a coffee. Have a few euros in cash, since the handmade pieces here are the sort of thing you actually take home. If you are passing through the lower Ebro valley, it is a pleasant reason to slow down for half an hour.
