Rodelinda: The Power of Love (Handel Baroque Opera)
A free open-to-all performance of Handel's baroque opera Rodelinda, a tale of love, loyalty and power in a Lombard court, performed by the Valencian Community Baroque Orchestra under conductor Alex Puchades. Sung opera carries little language barrier, making it an accessible evening of high-caliber live music for visitors.
Handel wrote Rodelinda for London audiences three centuries ago, and here it lands in a small-town arts centre with no ticket to buy. The Valencian Community Baroque Orchestra plays period-style under Alex Puchades, and the story does the heavy lifting: a queen holding her nerve while a usurper circles, her husband presumed dead, loyalty and power pulling in opposite directions. You don't need a word of Italian to follow the ache of it.
A couple of things worth knowing. The curtain goes up at 10pm, late even by Spanish standards, so this is a proper night out rather than an early one. It's pitched at adults, and seating is first-come, so arrive in good time. Free baroque opera of this calibre is a rare thing to stumble on while you're by the coast.
