Night of San Juan: Beach Bonfires & Pyromusical Show
The midsummer Night of San Juan on Benalmádena's seafront, with bonfires and burning 'júas' effigies on the beach at midnight, a midnight dip in the sea and a pyromusical fireworks show around 1am near Bil Bil Castle. One of the most atmospheric free nights of the Costa del Sol summer.
Spaniards see in midsummer with fire and seawater, and Benalmádena does it on the sand below Bil Bil Castle. Through the evening, bonfires build along the beach and locals haul down their "júas" — homemade effigies, often stuffed with the year's grudges and regrets — to burn at the stroke of midnight. The idea is simple: the flames take the old year's bad luck with them.
Then everyone wades in. A midnight dip is the done thing here, said to wash off whatever the fire didn't. Around 1am, a pyromusical show lights up the bay near the castle, fireworks timed to music over the water. It's free, it runs late, and it's busy in the best way. Bring a towel, expect sand in everything, and don't plan an early start the next morning.
